Garage Door Insulation Basics: What is Insulation?
Insulation is a material that builders install in garage doors to reduce the transmission of heat from in or out of your garage. Builders and contractors use a plethora of materials to insulate garage doors. At Lodi, we prefer to use Styrofoam with a vinyl backing because of its versatility. Other materials that are commonly used are radiant barriers and fiberglass. However, when picking the material you’d like to use for your door, check for the R-value, ease of installation, and compatibility with your door.
R-Values?
The next topic we’ll be looking into is R-values. An R-value is the measure of how well a two dimensional barrier resists the conductive flow of heat. The term is used in many facets of construction, but what you need to know is that having an R-value that ranges from R-6 to R-9 on an insulated door reaps many benefits.

There are many benefits to insulating your garage door. To summarize, adding insulation reduces energy costs, improves your doors’ durability, and dampens the noise your door makes when you’re operating it.
